Ayatollah Khatami is, I think, reflecting a sense of panic at the top. The mentality of the leadership is complicated, but because their self-image is that of pious Muslims, the notion of being dispensers of justice is a key one for them. They now find themselves being hated because they are so clearly unjust. That is driving them to make extreme statements. I agree that change is in the air in Iran. The question is, in what direction will things move? And nobody knows that yet. Skepth
